A stainless steel flange is a component used to connect pipes, pipelines, and valves to one another. It features holes and bolts that enable two flanges to be securely fastened together. Due to its outstanding performance, stainless steel flanges are widely used in many industries, making them one of the most commonly employed mechanical components in industrial equipment and manufacturing processes. They serve primarily as connecting parts, typically used at pipe ends or at the inlets and outlets of equipment.

The reason stainless steel flanges have such a wide range of applications lies in their convenient material, simple manufacturing process, low cost, extensive usability, and straightforward disassembly. Among flange mechanical fittings, stainless steel flanges clearly outperform other plastic pipe fittings due to their excellent pressure resistance, temperature tolerance, flexibility, and heat resistance. In terms of installation, stainless steel flange fittings are easy to install and boast good thermal conductivity, making them ideal for underfloor heating systems. Given the outstanding performance of stainless steel flanges, what precautions should be taken when using them?

1. To prevent intergranular corrosion in stainless steel flanges, the welding current used when welding flange covers should not be too high—about 20% lower than that used for carbon steel electrodes. Additionally, the arc length should not be too long, and it’s advisable to opt for narrow weld beads.

2. When welding, dry electrodes should be used, and the use of sticky oils and other contaminants should be avoided to reduce the carbon content in the weld and improve the quality of the welded components.

3. When welding stainless steel flanged pipe fittings, repeated heating can cause carbides to precipitate, thereby reducing corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

4. Stainless steel flange fittings exhibit greater hardenability after welding, making them prone to cracking. If the same type of stainless steel electrode is used, it is essential to perform preheating above 300℃ and post-weld slow cooling at around 700℃. If the welded component cannot undergo post-weld heat treatment, stainless steel flange pipe electrodes should be employed instead.

5、 When welding stainless steel flanges, the resulting weld quality will be superior to the overall quality of other types of flanges.
